This workshop focusses on advanced production concepts, specifically Sound Design, Custom Drum Kit creation, and Mixing & Mastering techniques. Students are given the freedom to bring in personal projects and focus on individual needs in their production stage.

Day 1: Building custom drum kits
- Layering kicks and snares to create a unique and balanced sound
- Processing drum sounds: saturation, compression, distortion, eq
- Reverb and delay on drum sounds
- Sends and returns in Drum Rack

Day 2: Sound Design with FM Synthesis - Ableton’s Operator
- What is FM synthesis
- Making a bass sound with Operator
- Making a pad sound with Operator
- Making a pluck sound with Operator
- Making a lead sound with Operator

Day 3: Coloring and Blending Your Sounds
- Eq
- Compression and side-chain compression
- Reverb and delay as insert effects
- Coloring the sound with saturation and distortion

Day 4: Mixing
- Frequency ranges and balance basics
- Limiting
- NY compression
- Reverb and delay via Sends and Returns

Day 5: Mastering
- Mastering chains broken apart
- EQ, saturation, compression, limiting
- Multiband Dynamics
- Bouncing a Master
- What Next? Releasing a song
- Open Q&A Session

To take part in the workshops please make sure to bring the following equipment:

  • A laptop with Ableton Live 9 installed. Live 9 can be downloaded for free for 30 days at
  • A pair of headphones
  • A MIDI keyboard such as the Novation Launchkey 25 is recommended, but a larger keyboard is fine too. (If you don't have a keyboard, please email us at and we may be able to lend you one.)



  • Certificate of Completion from Loop Academy
  • One month of access to the Loop Academy “Ask The Expert” Facebook Page
  • One student in each workshop will be selected to take the Music Foundations Course with Max Wild at Dubspot Online School



The maximum number of students per workshop is 20 students. The minimum number of students per workshop is 8 students. If the minimum number of students per workshop has not been met, it is up to the discretion of Loop Academy to hold the workshop or not. If the workshop is canceled due to low enrollment, any students that have paid for the workshop will receive a full refund.
